Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza survives second impeachment attempt

Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza has survived a second impeachment motion.

During a session at the Senate that extended past midnight, the first-time governor was acquitted of all seven charges as the majority of senators voted in her favor.

“The result of the division indicates the Senate has not upheld any of the charges. Therefore, the Senate has failed to remove from office the governor by impeachment. The governor accordingly continues to hold office,” Speaker Amason Kingi announced while announcing the official results of the voting exercise.

Immediately after the results were announced, Governor Mwangaza expressed her joy. She had earlier pleaded with the House to save her. “If there is a leader in this house, in Meru, and in Kenya that I have wronged, I ask for forgiveness,” Mwangaza said.

On her Facebook, she was jubilant and grateful. ” Glory be to God. Meru has won,” she posted.

Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot advised the governor to take all necessary steps to unite Meru, as it is evident that the county is deeply divided.

“It cannot be all these 59 MCAs on different occasions in less than a year say you are unfit for office, and they are wrong. Should God grant you the grace to lead the people of Meru, then change your ways and find it fit in your heart to find a way to work with other leaders,” advised Mr Cheruiyot.

Following the outcome, Public Service, Performance, and Delivery Management Cabinet Secretary CS Moses Kuria joined other Kawira supporters in congratulating her.

” The devil wins battles. The Lord wins the war; Congratulations governor Hon Kawira Mwangaza,” Kuria wrote on his Facebook page and posted photos of him and the governor celebrating at the Senate following the victory.

Earlier in the day, some Senators censured Moses Kuria over what they termed sloppy conduct in office.

That followed a Tuesday night social media post where CS Kuria criticised 13 senators over the ongoing impeachment hearing against Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza, saying that they were being misled by external forces.

Among those on Kuria’s list were Aaron Cheruiyot (Kericho), Jackson Mandago (Uasin Gishu), Hillary Sigei (Bomet), Alex Mundigi (Embu), Samson Cherargei (Nandi) and Seki Lenku Ole Kanar (Kajiado).

The closely followed impeachment motion was tackled in a plenary at the Senate for two days.
